Supporting Our State
The mission of the West Virginia Gaming and Racing Association (WVGRA) is three-fold: to protect our jobs, our investments, and our ability to generate millions of dollars of funding each year for critically needed programs and services from which West Virginians benefit. The WVGRA aims to communicate how the industry significantly supports and promotes West Virginia’s economy as the revenue generated goes to just about everything in the state, from education to tourism to senior services.
With an economic impact in excess of $1 billion annually, the video lottery and racing industry represents a critical economic pillar and is a large source of state revenue. However, the industry simply cannot afford any additional burdens. It is our hope that by creating awareness about the industry, its benefits, and contributions in West Virginia, our legislators and other state leaders will be able to make informed, fact-based decisions about the significance of the industry and our sustainability in the future.
West Virginia became the fifth US online state to legalize online gambling when HB 2934 passed the State House in February 2019. More recently (July 2020), the first legal online casinos launched in the state.
With a total of 5 land-based casinos in West Virginia (see table below), the new gambling regulation allows for each land-based casino to apply for a single online casino license, which permits them to have up to 3 casinos skins.
